The eyes are considered to be the most expressive feature of the face. As we age, the eyes are often one of the first facial features to show signs of aging. Blepharoplasty treats the aging eyelids and can be done on the upper lids, lower lids or both making you look more youthful, rested and alert. Ideally, the eyebrows should have an arch above the corner of the eye. If this is not the case, you may require an eyebrow lift in addition to an upper eye lid lift.
Blepharoplasty procedure involves a surgical modification of the eyelid. Excess tissue such as skin and fat are repositioned and surrounding muscles and tendons may be reinforced. This procedure can be both a functional and a cosmetic procedure.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is always done for cosmetic reasons to reduce wrinkling of the skin and improve bags and puffiness under the eyes. For patients with lower lid wrinkles, laser can be done at the same time to provide a smooth appearance and tighten up the skin under the eyes.
Blepharoplasty can be performed for functional reasons when excess amounts of upper eyelid skin and tissue is present. In this case, skin may protrude over the eyelashes causing a loss of peripheral vision. Your eye doctor can give you a visual fields exam to show loss of peripheral vision indicating a medical necessity for blepharoplasty.
After eyelid surgery
You will be given instruction on how to care for and keep incisions sites clean. You will be given a prescription for medicated ointment to use also. During your initial healing time, you may experience swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eyes. Cold compresses, lubricating eye drops and the prescribed ointment will help with discomfort. Bruising, swelling and redness will improve over time. It is helpful to sleep with your head elevated for the first week or 2 to help with swelling. Dr. Wolpoe will see you back in the office to remove sutures in 5-6 days following your surgery.
