A facelift is a surgical procedure to improve signs of aging such as: sagging in the midface, deep creases from the nose extending to the corners of the mouth, fat that has fallen or become displaced, loss of muscle tone in the lower face creating jowls, or loose skin and fatty deposits under the chin and jaw to give the appearance of a double chin.
If you are considering a facelift, it is important to choose a board certified plastic surgeon for your surgery. For any plastic surgery to be successful, it is important to have a good rapport between patient and surgeon. Your surgeon will be able to answer your questions and help you decide what needs to be addressed for your facelift and if you may need additional cosmetic procedures to achieve your desired end result. As with any cosmetic procedure, it is important to have realistic expectations.
During your consultation, your physician will evaluate your skin condition, ethnic background, and basic bone structure. There are different types of facelifts as well as different techniques and your surgeon will discuss those with you during the consultation and help you decide what is best for you.
The facelift procedure involves a few incisions and skin is lifted while underlying tissues are tightened and repositioned. Some excess skin and fat may also be removed during the procedure.
After the procedure
Most patients experience little pain and discomfort and some degree of bruising and swelling should be expected. It is best to sleep with your head elevated for a couple of weeks to help keep some of the swelling down. Dr. Wolpoe will see you the first day following your procedure to remove dressings and fit you with a compression garment. Recovery time from a facelift is usually 2 - 3 weeks and strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided during this time.
