Rhinoplasty is one of the most common of plastic surgeries performed every year. The nose is the most defining feature of the face and even small changes can create a big impact on how the face looks.
Patients request rhinoplasty for a variety of reasons and there are many features of the nose that can be changed with surgery such as: the size of the nose in relation to other facial features, nose width at the bridge, nose profile with humps or depressions on the bridge, nasal tip that is too large, drooping or too upturned, nostrils that are wide or upturned, nasal asymmetry and deviation.
Rhinoplasty can also be performed for functional reasons to improve breathing. During your consultation, your doctor examines the structure of your nose both internally and externally to evaluate what you can expect from rhinoplasty. Patients that have a realistic idea of what to expect will be the most satisfied with the outcome of the procedure.
Your doctor will take pictures of your nose and explain how nasal structures including bone and cartilage can be sculpted to reshape the nose. In some cases it might be necessary for your doctor to perform an ear cartilage graft or rib graft along with your rhinoplasty. There are many techniques and approaches to rhinoplasty and your doctor will explain what he thinks is best for you.
What to expect after your rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty procedure is usually done at Billings Clinic Surgery Center outpatient facility . Immediately after surgery, a splint may be placed on your nose to keep it stable and protected for 5-7 days. If packing has been placed inside the nose, this will be removed at your first follow-up appointment after surgery along with the splint.
After your surgery, your doctor will also advise you not to blow your nose for about 7 days after the surgery. In the first few days following surgery, you will experience bruising and swelling. Cold compresses applied the first days will help with bruising and swelling. It is important to follow all instructions from your doctor and avoid strenuous activities, exercise and contact sports until you are cleared to resume those activities by your surgeon.
Insurance does not cover cosmetic rhinoplasty. Some insurance companies will cover a rhinoplasty procedure if medical necessity can be demonstrated through difficulty breathing or deformity.
