Home Treatment You may be able to relieve your ear canal problem. If you are quite sure that you do not have a ruptured eardrum : Gently rinse the ear using a bulb syringe and warm saline solution or a half-and-half solution of white vinegar and warm water. Make sure the flushing solution is body temperature. Inserting cool or hot fluids in the ear may cause dizziness. If your ear is itchy, try nonprescription swimmer's eardrops, such as Star-Otic or Swim-Ear. |

Home Treatment When ear discomfort or pain is mild or comes and goes and occurs without other symptoms, home treatment may be all that is needed to relieve your child's discomfort. Home treatment measures include the following: Encourage your child to swallow more often. The discomfort may be caused by a blocked eustachian tube that can occur with mild irritation in the ear canal. Let a child younger than age 12 months drink from a bottle or cup to try to help open the eustachian tube. |

Home Treatment Home treatment may be all that is needed to relieve minor or intermittent ear discomfort. To ease ear pain, apply a warm washcloth or a heating pad set on low . There may be some drainage from the ear when the heat melts earwax . Do not use a heating pad when you are in bed. You may fall asleep and burn yourself. Do not use a heating pad on a child. Try an ice or cold pack to reduce swelling from a minor injury or sunburn. |

Earwax 07/01/2009
Home Treatment Do not try to remove earwax if you have ear pain or a discharge that looks different than earwax, if you think you have a ruptured eardrum , if you have had ear surgery, or if you have tubes in your ears. Soften and loosen the earwax with warm mineral oil or a mixture of hydrogen peroxide mixed with an equal amount of room-temperature water. Place 2 drops of the fluid, warmed to body temperature, in the ear twice a day for up to 5 days. |
