The Human Performance Lab at Billings Clinic Orthopedics & Sports Medicine uses VO2 Max, also known as maximum oxygen uptake, as an indicator of aerobic fitness. It is the fastest rate at which your body can use oxygen to make energy. The higher your VO2 Max, the better the potential for endurance performance.
Serial VO2 Max testing helps assess the effectiveness of your training on aerobic capacity. Typically this test is very short, yet very strenuous. It takes most athletes from 12-to-15 minutes to complete the test.
Billings Clinic Orthopedics & Sports Medicine uses the Viasys Oxycon Mobile Ergospirometry system for metabolic testing. Our unique mobile unit is an accurate and reliable system that allows the determination of a subjects’ metabolic response while exercising or working.
The system records data breath-by-breath, and is based on the "Open System Approach." It is a light, battery-operated portable ergospirometry system that is mounted to the subject’s body on a comfortable vest. The Oxycon Mobile allows testing for a variety of people from children to adults and from patients to athletes.
The breath-by-breath data is collected through a facemask or mouthpiece and sent to a computer via wireless transmission, making the device suitable for use in a non-laboratory environment. Fields of application include:
- sport and exercise
- work environment
