Genetic Counseling is a process of providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders, and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. During genetic counseling, patients and their families learn about genetic conditions for which they are at risk and are offered support as they begin to adapt to the medical, psychological and family issues that arise with genetic disease. This may include learning about genetic testing, management, prevention, resources and research. The primary goal of genetic counseling is to promote informed choices and healthy adaptation to the risk or condition.
