Open House set for Billings Clinic Psychiatric Stabilization Unit

Public invited Saturday, February 24, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Billings, MT— Billings Clinic invites the public to an open house at the new Psychiatric Stabilization Unit on Saturday, February 24 from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. A presentation and ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 11:45 a.m. The unit is located at the Inpatient Psychiatric Center at 1050 10th Ave. N.

The 3500 square foot unit is changing the way that Billings Clinic provides care to patients experiencing psychiatric emergency. Instead of evaluation and treatment taking place in the Emergency and Trauma Center, patients who are medically stable have this unique space to cater to their specific needs. The unit design and care model are adapted from the Alameda Model, founded by Dr. Scott Zeller. The core of the unit consists of two large rooms with natural light, one for adults and one for youth, where patients have immediate access to specially-trained staff and where they can socialize with each other. There are also private rooms available for those who need them. The unit is designed to accommodate twelve adults and five youth patients.

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust awarded Billings Clinic a $784,271 grant to assist in the completion of the new Psychiatric Stabilization Unit.

In addition, $1 million were raised through the 2016 Billings Clinic Classic, $750,000 of which funded an endowment to support the Psychiatric Stabilization Unit in the future. Other significant donations toward this project include the Fortin Foundation of Florida, the Charles M. Bair Family Trust; and Stillwater Mining Company. The general contractor on the project is Jones Construction and the architectural firm is A & E Architects, PC.

Billings Clinic has been dedicated to mental health care for decades, operating the only acute inpatient psychiatric unit for adults and youth in the region. Billings Clinic also has the largest outpatient Psychiatric Department in the area and has been a leader in research and innovative strategies to address mental health care, including equine therapy.
