High Dose Rate Brachytherapy

At Billings Clinic Cancer Center, our experienced Radiation Oncology Team uses High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR) to treat cancer of the prostate and gynecologic sites.

Our multidisciplinary team of radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and nurses work as a team to ensure each patient receives the best individualized care possible.

HDR is an effective form of therapy that allows radiation oncologists to administer radiation to a very small and internal area of the body while minimizing side effects.

Benefits of HDR Brachytherapy

  • Minimally invasive compared to traditional surgery
  • Out-patient procedure which allows patients to return to normal activities more quickly
  • Fewer side effects
  • Designed to preserve normal organ function of the affected area
  • Extremely accurate in targeting cancer tissue while minimizing dose to surrounding organs and tissues
  • Effective in treating many types of cancer such as prostate and cervical cancer when compared to traditional external beam radiation or surgery
  • Quicker recovery times – due to the minimally invasive technique, recovery times may be reduced over other forms of treatment
  • Shorter treatment course than with some conventional therapies
