Urogynecology & Women's Pelvic Health

What is Urogynecology?

"Urogynecology is a specialized area of women’s health that focuses on conditions affecting the pelvic floor - the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support the bladder, uterus, and bowel.

When these structures become weakened or don’t work properly, it can lead to symptoms like bladder leakage, a feeling of pelvic pressure or bulging, difficulty emptying the bladder, or problems with bowel control. Urogynecologists are experts in diagnosing and treating these conditions."

What Does a Urogynecologist Do?

A urogynecologist is specially trained to:

  • Evaluate pelvic floor conditions
  • Identify the cause of symptoms
  • Offer both non-surgical and surgical treatment options
  • Create a personalized care plan based on each patient’s needs and goals

What to Expect:

Before your visit, you’ll receive a questionnaire [PDF] to fill out. Your answers help us understand your specific health concerns and how they affect your life. Bring your complete questionnaire to your appointment. At your appointment with a urogynecology provider, you’ll:

  • Provide a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection before testing your bladder function
  • Have a physical exam like a regular gynecologic exam, focusing on bladder support, uterus position, vagina and rectum
  • Have a pelvic floor muscle strength and pain check while lying or standing
  • After your exam and tests, you and your doctor will talk about your treatment options. Your doctor will answer your questions and help you feel comfortable with your treatment decisions

Urogynecology Services:

Your body changes after childbirth and with age. Sometimes, those changes can cause unexpected pelvic, structural and urinary problems. Visit our doctors for a diagnosis of your pain and symptoms, such as:

  • Urinary and Fecal Incontinence
  • Stress Urinary Incontinence: Stress urinary incontinence is involuntary loss of urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, or exercising. This happens when the support of the urethra weakens as a result of aging or pregnancy/childbirth. Treatment options include:
    • Pelvic floor physical therapy to strengthen the pelvic floor
    • Pessaries – vaginal insert devices to add support to the urethra
    • Urethral bulking agents
      • Bulkamid is a water-based gel that is injected into the walls of the urethra. This creates cushions that help to close the urethra, preventing urine leakage.
    • Midurethral sling
      • This is a highly effective surgical procedure that involve placing a synthetic sling underneath the urethra that acts as a supportive mechanism to prevent leakage when abdominal pressure increases.
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse
  • Pelvic Floor Disorders
  • Voiding Dysfunction
  • Overactive Bladder
  • Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Urogynecology Treatments:

Understanding these conditions helps you manage your health and discover the best solutions. Count on us for treatments to correct or help improve your condition and everyday life. Your doctor might use medical and surgical methods to help you feel better. These methods can improve your quality of life:

  • Non-surgical treatments such as medications for bladder control, pessary fitting and management, and neuromodulation therapies
