Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)
Stress urinary incontinence is involuntary loss of urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, or exercising. This happens when the support of the urethra weakens as a result of aging or pregnancy/childbirth.
Treatment options include:
- Pelvic floor physical therapy to strengthen the pelvic floor
- Pessaries – vaginal insert devices to add support to the urethra
- Urethral bulking agents
- Bulkamid is a water-based gel that is injected into the walls of the urethra. This creates cushions that help to close the urethra, preventing urine leakage.
- Midurethral sling
- This is a highly effective surgical procedure that involve placing a synthetic sling underneath the urethra that acts as a supportive mechanism to prevent leakage when abdominal pressure increases.
