Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Billings Clinic!

Residents train within a tertiary medical center located in the heart of Yellowstone country. We are near beautiful mountains, streams, and prairies that provide ample opportunities for active lifestyles. Billings itself offers arts, dining, and music that are seen in larger cities but is small enough to enjoy in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Billings Clinic Internal Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to training exceptional general internists through a foundation of academic rigor, innovative learning, and immersive clinical experience. We prepare our residents to thrive in both urban and rural settings, equipping them with the skills and adaptability to deliver high-quality care wherever it is needed. With unopposed learning environments, our residents benefit from unparalleled exposure to a wide range of unique pathologies, gaining hands-on experience across the full spectrum of internal medicine. Positioned at the critical intersection of rural and urban healthcare, we foster a learning environment that emphasizes clinical experience and leadership in a diverse health care system - developing physicians who are city-trained, but rural-ready.

Director's Message

Steven Gerstner

Billings Clinic Internal Medicine residency aims to excel in medical education and provide evidence-based healthcare to rural Montana.

In 2025, we welcomed our 12th Internal Medicine Residency class to Billings, Montana. Whether you are moving to Billings for one year or three, the breadth of education at Billings Clinic will prepare you for next steps in your career. Billings is a friendly mid-sized city close to mountains and rivers for hiking, skiing, biking, and more. It offers a lifestyle that you can enjoy in your spare time outside the hospital as much as your time in it.

We are a small program embedded in an academic medical center that provides tertiary care to a large multi-state area. This setting results in residents’ exposure to medicine that is seen in major university associated hospitals. Our size is one of our strengths: our residents know each other, and our small faculty-to-resident ratio allows for interaction and support not seen in larger programs.

Educational experiences designed specifically for interns and residents are held daily in the hospital and in the outpatient clinics. These experiences include robust morning reports, resident-run M&M sessions, and Evidence-Based Medicine journal clubs. Daily noon conference didactics are delivered by IM and subspecialty faculty.

We strive to train physicians to practice in rural or other settings which may have limited resources. Our graduates have gone on to various settings; multiple have stayed on as faculty or otherwise at Billings Clinic, others have moved on to private practice, some have become physician leaders, and many of our graduates have entered fellowships.

I invite you to look closely at our program, we have much to offer you!
