Applying for Pharmacy Residency with Billings Clinic

Eligibility Requirements

To be appointed to the Billings Clinic PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Programs, applicants must:

  1. Have a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree or equivalent from an ACPE-accredited school/college of pharmacy or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Board of Pharmacy (NABP). At a minimum, the program must be a five-year pharmacy degree program.
  2. Be licensed or eligible for licensure as a registered pharmacist in the state of Montana
  3. Be enrolled with the ASHP Resident Matching Program (Billings Clinic’s National Matching Services Codes:
  4. Be a United States citizen or eligible to work in the U.S. without needing visa sponsorship as the organization does not sponsor visas.

Application

  1. Apply online through the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS). Complete a PhORCAS application.

Deadline: January 2nd. Please ensure all application items are submitted by this date.

Standard Application Items for PhORCAS

Submit the following items through PhORCAS:

  • Letter of intent describing your goals (for your career and residency) and areas of interest.
    • Limit the letter to 1 page please
    • Address all 5 of the following key areas:
      • What are your short-term (0-5 years) and long-term (6-15 years) career goals?
      • What are your areas of pharmacy practice interest?
      • Why are you interested in the PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Billings Clinic?
      • What can you offer to the program?
      • What goals would you like to accomplish during residency?
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Official transcript from your school/college of pharmacy (uploaded into PhORCAS)
  • Three (3) references, using the standard reference format as outlined in PhORCAS

ASHP Resident Matching Program

  • All applicants must be registered with the ASHP Resident Matching Program and comply with all rules and requirements of the Match.
  • This residency site agrees that no person at this site will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any residency applicant.
  • Billings Clinic’s National Matching Services codes:
    • PGY1 program in the acute care setting: NMS code 157713
    • PGY1 in the ambulatory care setting: NMS code 292013

Interviews

Telephone and virtual interviews are required for each residency candidate in whom the program is interested.

Telephone Interviews

For selected individuals, telephone interviews are completed by the Residency Program Director and may last up to 1 hour.

Virtual Interviews

Following telephone interviews, Billings Clinic conducts virtual interviews for qualifying candidates with the option of an in-person open house. Virtual interviews typically last 2.5 - 3.5 hours (depending on the program) and are conducted via Microsoft™ Teams™. Residency candidates interview with different groups of individuals, including the Residency Program Director and program preceptors, current residents, and other staff.

$58,240

  • Up to 27 days annual leave accrued, includes vacation and sick leave
    • 10 days may be utilized during the residency
    • Remaining qualifying days may be rolled-over upon further employment with Billings Clinic or cashed-out at the end of the residency year per Human Resources policies.

Professional Conferences Professional leave is generally allowed for the following educational meetings:

  • ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting – Poster presentation
  • Montana Pharmacy Association Spring Seminar – Research/major project presentation
  • Mountain States Conference – Research/major project presentation

Travel expenses for professional meetings are covered by Billings Clinic if they meet the requirements for travel and are approved by the executive(s) overseeing Pharmacy. Residents are not required by the programs to participate in professional meetings if travel expenses are not approved.

BPS Certification

The PGY1 programs at Billings Clinic are designed to prepare residents to successfully pass the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) Pharmacotherapy examination or Ambulatory Care Pharmacist examination. After completion of residency, residents are encouraged to become board certified. This gives residents a goal to aspire towards and adds depth to their learning. Board certification allows residents to set themselves apart from their colleagues and become recognized as model practitioners. Reimbursement for the exam may be available.
