I’m Kiki and I’m 17 years old. I was born with Spina Bifida, Caudal Regression Syndrome and Scoliosis. My biological mother was 15 when I was born and did not have the means or the ability to support and care for me. Because of physical abuse and drug use in our home, I was taken from my birth parents when I was six years old. For the next ten years, I cycled through the foster care system because most people did not want to deal with me and my disabilities. By the time I was 14, I had been placed in seven different homes, including a failed adoption. I faced medical neglect and abuse at almost every stop. I had many medical setbacks that I was forced to endure on my own. I felt like I had no one. No one to trust, no one to care for me, and no one that would love me.
My world changed in 2015 when I was placed with the Hinthorne family. I soon realized that they were different. They treated me like their daughter and they were the first people to tell me that they loved me. For the first time in my life, I had advocates who prioritized my health and my care. During my first two months with the Hinthornes, I became a regular at Billings Clinic. The care that I have received from the Pediatric Specialists has transformed my life. They have done everything in their power to help me lead a healthier, happier life.
I can say that Billings Clinic and my new family have finally given me the stability that I have looked for throughout my very unstable young life. Tom and Abby have become my legal guardians and I also gained a sister, Kendahl. I can focus on my future with hope and excitement. I just finished driver’s ed and will start my senior year of high school this fall. After graduating I plan on attending college to become an equine therapist.
While my journey may be unique, there are many kids in our region who also suffer from serious and chronic medical conditions. Please join me in supporting Billings Clinic Foundation’s ambitious new initiative to expand services and support for our region’s children and their families.
Your gift will provide support for kids like me. The excellent care I received from the Pediatric Specialists at Billings Clinic has not only made me healthier, but has given me a voice and hope for the future. With your help, we can provide comfort, hope, and healing to more kids.
P.S. Your help is needed for this $4 million project that will enhance the Pediatric Specialty Clinic’s treatment areas, provide telemedicine to the region and expand pediatric endowments to provide much-needed patient assistance to families who need a little extra support when circumstances seem unbearable.
